Streetcar Scoop: Summer Edition

If you thought the end of July signaled the close of the summer, then oh boy, did you have it wrong! There’s so much to do and see in August and into September (which, who are we kidding, is basically the unofficial fourth month of the season). From showing off your dance moves at Caribana to experiencing the culinary delights of the Danforth, here are the top attractions for the second half of the summer of 2019.

The Toronto Caribbean Carnival Grand Parade | August 3rd

Known colloquially as “Caribana,” this music festival and cultural celebration has been going on since early July but comes to a crown with the Grand Parade. Taking place this Saturday, August 3rd, the parade assembles at Exhibition Place and Lakeshore Boulevard and then turns into an all-night dance party. Expect brightly coloured costumes, masquerade bands, and a whole lot of fun. Tickets are available for the assembly area, but most of the parade takes place on Lakeshore Boulevard and is completely free. Learn more at Caribana Toronto.

OVO Fest | August 4th & 5th

Following the fun of Caribana, Drake is set to take over the Budweiser Stage for OVO Fest, the Canadian rapper’s annual concert known for its popularity and celebrity appearances. This year’s lineup is expected to include musical appearances from B2K, Chingy, Ying Yang Twins, Lloyd, Mario, Pretty Ricky, and Booby V. Drake himself is set to take the stage Monday, August 5th, which is the Civic Holiday. Limited tickets are still available. Check out OVO for details.

Taste of the Danforth | August 9th & 10th

After all that dancing, you’re going to need to fuel up. Thankfully, the 26th annual Taste of the Danforth is just around the corner. August 9th to 10th, the Danforth closes down between Broadview to Jones Avenue for a cultural and culinary celebration. In addition to the Greek music you expect from Taste of the Danforth, this year’s festivities also include performances, celebrity appearances, and a Kid’s Zone—not to mention at Sport’s Zone with activations with the Raptors, Leafs, Argos, and more. Electric Island | August 10th

The Electric Island concert and picnic series return to Hanlan’s point August 10th for another day of fun in the sun. Take the ferry or a water taxi to the island and leave your cares behind. August’s lineup includes DJ sets from Hot Since 82, Lee Foss, Andy Cue, and more. Pack plenty of sunscreen, a blanket for lounging, and comfortable shoes for dancing. Get tickets in advance on the event’s website.

CNE | August 16th – September 2nd

What would the summer be without the CNE? The Canadian National Exhibition, known otherwise as ‘the Ex’, is always a draw for young and old. Whether you’re into the games, the rides, the shopping or the food creations (deep-fried Mars bar, anyone?) there’s something for everyone. This year’s Ex features a gaming garage, complete with Pinball and Arcade games/tournaments, as well as an Innovation garage, which includes a pitch competition and robots. Check out all that’s happening at the 2019 CNE here.
