On Our Radar: Bourbon Hot Chocolate from Boxcar Social
It may be unseasonably warm here in Toronto this week, but that doesn’t mean it’s too hot for hot chocolate—especially if that hot chocolate comes from our friends at Boxcar Social. Located in Riverside, Boxcar Social takes drinks very seriously, and their Bourbon Hot Chocolate is no exception. In fact, Taylor C. Seymour, Boxcar Social’s general manager and winner of Now‘s best barista in 2015, says the drink is more of an experience that comes complete with theatrics.
Homemade chocolate syrup veering on the rich and salty side gets its sweetness from bourbon (usually one that’s low in alcohol and apparent in sugars, Seymour says) and milk from Quebec’s Societe Orignal, which the coffee enthusiast says, “has exceptional texture and sweetness.” The whole thing is topped off with a Bake Shoppe Bourbon Smoked Marshmallow. Yes, it is hand toasted to order.
A space that functions as a café by day and a bar by night, it’s no surprise to us that Boxcar Social was able to create a drink that combines the best of both worlds. Tasting flights give customers and self-proclaimed “beverage nerds” a chance to experience the full spectrum of Boxcar’s offerings.
“The Whiskey Tango (two bourbons, two espressos) and the pour-over and beer pairing are both cool ways to see both sides of the business,” Seymour says. “Coming up, we’ll be tapping a Woodford Reserve Bourbon-aged beer with the bourbon itself, which is absolutely delicious. Otherwise, we are always trying new things, so you have to stop by to see.”
